chicago vertical

Chicago is such a great city to look at architecture because many of the roads are wide enough to actually see building facades. I liked this reflection here. And I believe that old library is now the Chicago Cultural Center.

All-Stars in the Stands

Last year I shot a story on beer vendors at Wrigley Field. So when I went to last week's shutout I couldn't help but shoot a few more.

front row disaster

Through the Limpire network, I ended up with third-row box seats for the Cubs v. Giants game last Thursday night at Wrigley Field. It was 90 degrees that day. On September 23rd! It was something amazing.

SLIM8177

The Giants won 13-0. They scored 9 runs in the second inning. It was the biggest farce I'd ever seen. Well, until Saturday when I ended up at the University of Michigan v. Bowling Green game...where Michigan won 65-21.

bronx views

A photo from February 2009, from Highbridge Park in upper Manhattan. This is a view of The Bronx over the East River. It was one of the first photos I took that my militant Israeli photography teacher approved of. I still remember what she said: "Now this--this is interesting."

goodbye summer

It hit 90 degrees last week on the first day of fall. But I think the summer is now officially over.

No more of these shenanigans.

vertical el

An El station at night. I love the El. It reminds me of the NYC subway...in Queens.

Today I am going on another short trip, this time to Michigan. I look forward to more of this.

ghost flash

Here's a cool photo that I'm still trying to figure out.

SLIM6595

I checked the EXIF data and apparently I shot this at: 400 ISO, 4.0, WITH flash, and a 2.5 second exposure.

Figure that one out.

garter toss

My cousin Gary got married this weekend in Ohio. He had to toss the garter three times because he launched sling-shot style straight into the ceiling the first two times. I like this photo because of all the flashes going off, and the halo you get around the hired photographer's flash (on the left) looks like the arc Gary's arm is tracing.

the real windy city

We drove through this wind farm in Indiana. Wind power is so cool. It seems so low-tech and high-tech at the same time...like the 1950s idea of "The Future."

This photo is from last year but I just re-discovered it. It's the Unisphere in Corona Park / Flushing Meadows, Queens.

I hope your Saturday night plans look a little better than this. And that your Friday was a lot more interesting.

a little geekout

I went to see my friend's hardcore band play Tuesday night, and tested a new (well, new to me) camera that can shoot at 3200 ISO. This number refers to film sensitivity, meaning that it can make images in very low light. And that's important because I shoot a lot in bad light and don't like using a flash.

Let's geek out for a second. Here's a photo I shot Tuesday night in Chicago. I have clearer ones, but I like this the best. Not sure what produced that green flare spot.

SLIM6276

So, that one above was shot with the Canon Mark III. Compare that with this shot of Sugar & Gold I took in New York last year with the Mark II.

Sugar & Gold at The Delancey

See how much grainier the second one is? It was also shot at 3200 ISO, f 4.0, with a focal length of 24mm. This first shot was exposed a touch longer (1/15 as opposed to 1/25 of a second, but I never said this was a scientific comparison. The lighting conditions were also different--probably equally crappy, but different.)

In any case, I approve. I would have loved this sort of low-light resolution during the blackouts in Buenos Aires.

the marty game

I love this kid. He made his a sidewalk version of skee-ball and decided to name it after himself.

I wonder now if he was giving out prizes. And how much money he made. I hope it was a lot.

This handsome man came to visit me over the Labor Day weekend. Like a good tour guide, I took him to shoot photos of "The Bean" in Millenium Park.

This guy just won his mother a teddy bear. She took a really long time to choose what she wanted. The whole scene was so cute it damn near killed me.

the lone wolf

This first made me smile...and then it made me kind of sad.

Because really, if you're such a rebel, why did you come to Taste of Polonia? For the blintzes and terrific polka?

pigs on the wing

All right, I took this with my iPhone. That's right, I have an iPhone. I stupidly forgot my camera one day, and of course I found myself at the Pixar music festival (Pixarpalooza), where they had their own floating pig, which would have made for some fun photos, particularly when the pig started drifting dangerously close to the heat lamps.

climate change

Another shot from a plane! But this one is cool, too. This shows how quickly the terrain changes in the East Bay. On the right, you can see the San Francisco Bay, then as you trace left across the photo (west), you can see the mountains and then the desert of the valley.

IMG_4438

Well, at least I think it's cool.

Happy Anniversary, I love you guys.

west south west

I shot this just a few minutes after taking off from San Francisco and heading to Chicago. I like that in this photo you can see a golf course wedged between an industrial zone and the Oakland airport.

This photo is facing south and heading west over the San Francisco Bay.

birthday banquet

Sunday was Juan's birthday, and I made us a picnic to take along in his camper van as we watched the sun set over the Bay. This is a dulce de leche cheesecake. I was so concerned with trying to take a proper photo that I forgot to tell him to make a wish.

IMG_4423

I did sing, though.
